Vijay Kokane

My place is over at Samrat Ashok Chawl, specifically unit number 7 on Mathurdas Road in Dharavi. Vijay Kokane is the name on the door. It’s a busy area, as anyone who knows Dharavi can tell you. There is always something going on outside, people moving back and forth, and noise from the street. I’ve lived and worked in this spot for a long time. It is a small space, but it fits what I do. You won't find any big reception area or shiny furniture here. It is just a practical workshop where I spend most of my daylight hours. Dealing with the heat and the crowds is just part of the daily routine. I usually start early before it gets too loud. My neighbors are all good people, mostly folks doing their own small trades. We look out for each other. Sometimes the rain makes things tricky on Mathurdas Road, but we manage. I didn't want a big corporate office because that's not who I am. I like being where the action is, right in the heart of the chawl. It’s honest work and it keeps me busy. If you’re looking for me, just ask around the Samrat Ashok Chawl area. Most people can point you toward number 7. It’s nothing special to look at, but it’s home to my business and that is enough for me. It’s a simple life and I’m fine with that. I wouldn't trade it for a fancy office.
