We are tucked away at 4/96 in the Anand Ashram building on R G Thadani road in Worli. Varun Estate Agency is not a big place with glass walls and carpets. It is just a functional office where we keep our files and meet people. Real estate in this part of town is a lot of work. We spend many hours walking around the different lanes to see which properties are actually available. Our shoes get worn out pretty fast. Inside the office, the walls are covered with old maps of the area. We have a couple of heavy cupboards filled with documents from years ago. It is mostly just two or three of us here. We spend a lot of time on the phone, trying to coordinate between different parties. Sometimes people just stop by because they saw our sign while walking to the sea face. We offer them a plastic chair and some water. It is a very local way of doing things. We don't use much fancy software to track listings. Mostly it is all in our heads or written down in our big diaries. Worli has changed so much with all the new towers, but our little corner remains pretty much the same. We just keep track of who is moving where and help out with the paperwork involved. Every deal takes time and a lot of talking, so we just take it slow and steady each and every afternoon.
