Solanki Silk House

Solanki Silk House is located at 95 Bora Bazar Street right in the heart of the Fort area. It’s an old building with high ceilings and a lot of character though the paint is peeling in some places. We have shelves and shelves of silk fabric in every color you can imagine. The street outside is always bustling with shoppers and office workers from the nearby buildings. It gets a bit dusty because we leave the doors open to get some air inside. We spend a lot of time unfolding fabric for people to look at and then folding it all back up again neatly. It’s a slow process and requires a lot of patience. The floors are made of old wood that creaks when you walk over certain spots. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that. We just rely on people walking by and seeing what we have in the window. Sometimes the light in the back of the shop goes out and we have to use a torch to find things. It’s not a perfect setup but it has worked for us for years. The afternoon can be quiet when everyone is having lunch but then it picks up again toward the evening. We try to keep the fabrics covered so they don't get sun-bleached. It’s a lot of manual work but we enjoy seeing the different patterns and colors that come in every week.
