Silkangan

Silkangan is located at No. 39 on the ground floor of Kewal Industrial Estate. It’s right on Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel, which is a very busy and crowded part of Mumbai. Being on the ground floor is a bit of a blessing and a curse. It’s easy for people to walk in and for us to move goods, but it also gets quite noisy with the traffic and people shouting outside. The space is a bit narrow, so we have to be very organized with how we stack our materials. There are rolls of fabric and various textiles tucked into every available corner. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we’re usually too busy to worry about that. There’s a small desk near the entrance where someone sits to answer questions or take down orders. During the monsoon, the humidity in the industrial estate gets really high, and we have to be careful with the stock. We don't have a website or a fancy catalog. Most of our regular visitors just know what we have by looking through the stacks. We’ve been in this unit at Lower Parel for years, and we’ve seen the area change a lot around us. It’s a tight-knit community of workers in this building, and we all know each other’s names. It’s just our little spot in the middle of a big, loud city.
