Versova 41527 is where we tucked ourselves away. The name is Scrumptiious, though I think we added too many 'i's when we first registered it. Oh well. It’s a tiny place. Most of the space is taken up by the big cooling racks and the sacks of flour. We started this because we liked the smell of baking bread, but now it’s more about the washing up. There are always so many bowls to scrub. We don’t have a display case with fancy lights. We just put the cakes on the counter and people pick what they want. Sometimes the frosting isn’t perfectly smooth, but that’s because we aren’t robots. We use real butter and eggs we get from the guy down the road. The neighborhood is noisy, especially when the fishing boats are coming in, but inside it’s mostly just the sound of the mixer. We have a small window that looks out onto the alley. Not much of a view, but it lets some air in. People come in for a slice of something sweet when they’ve had a bad day. We don’t talk much, just hand over the box and take the cash. It’s a straightforward business. We bake until we run out of ingredients or get too sleepy to continue. That’s the whole story of this little shop. We just keep the oven warm and hope the power doesn't cut out.
