My office is at 18 B on the Mahim Sitladevi Temple Road. It is a very specific spot because you can often hear the bells from the temple if the wind is blowing the right way and the traffic isn't too loud. Sangeeta B Paradkar is the name on the papers, but really it's just a small group of us working out of this one room. The building is old, like most things in Mahim, and has that particular smell of sea air and old stone. I spend a lot of time just keeping track of everything that comes in. We don't have a big fancy sign outside or a lobby with a receptionist. You just walk in and we are there at our desks. Most of our day is spent dealing with the local paperwork and people from the neighborhood who have been coming to us for years. It gets very busy during the festival times because the road outside becomes almost impossible to walk through, but we still open up. I like the routine of it. I make some tea in the morning, open the windows to let a bit of air in, and then get to work. It isn’t anything like those big offices you see in the movies. We have stacks of files and sometimes the computer acts up, but we get the job done eventually. It is just how we have always done things here and it seems to suit everyone involved.
