Our place is located right in the middle of Dharavi. It is a very busy area with a lot of people moving around and trucks trying to get through the narrow lanes. We have been operating from here for quite a long time now. The building is old and the stairs are a bit steep but we have gotten used to it. Most of our day is spent handling different products and making sure everything is packed or sorted correctly. There is usually a bit of a mess with cardboard boxes and packing tape lying around because we are always in the middle of a job. It gets quite hot in the afternoons so we keep the big doors open to let some air in. You can hear the sounds of the neighborhood all day long, from the workshops nearby to the kids playing in the street. We don't have a fancy office with air conditioning or glass tables. It is just a practical workspace where we get things done. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit and we just wait it out or work by the sunlight coming through the door. The people working here have been with us for years so we all know the routine. We just keep our heads down and focus on the work at hand. It is an honest way to spend the day in a place that never really sleeps, even when it’s raining hard outside and the lanes get a bit muddy for everyone.
