About Odissi Classical Dance – Education in Mumbai
We've been doing this for a while here in Malad at A-604. It's just a regular space where we practice Odissi. People come by after work or school to learn the steps and the hand movements. It gets quite busy in the evenings. We don't have fancy lights or anything, just a floor and some mirrors. It's mostly about getting the posture right and staying in time with the rhythm. Sometimes the music is a bit loud, but the neighbors are used to it by now. We spend a lot of time on the basics because they take forever to master. It’s not just about dancing; it's more of a routine for us. You might see us stretching or just sitting around talking about the next performance. Most students live nearby, so it’s a local crowd. We keep things pretty simple. If you walk past building A-604, you’ll probably hear the bells on our ankles. It's a nice way to keep the tradition going without making a big deal out of it. We just show up, tie our ghungroos, and get to work on the pieces. It’s hard work, and your legs will definitely hurt the next day, but that’s just how it is with classical dance. We don't do anything flashy, just the traditional stuff we were taught. Our classes are open to anyone who wants to learn, regardless of their skill level. We just ask that you show up on time and try your best.
