Chins Dance Academy is tucked away inside Parvati Niwas, right near the Matunga Station on the East side. It’s an old building, number 62, and you can definitely hear the local trains rattling by on the tracks if you listen for a second. We are very close to the Matunga Gymkhana too, so there is always some sports activity or people walking around that part of the neighborhood. The academy isn't a high-tech studio with neon lights or anything. It’s just a big room with mirrors where we spend our hours teaching and practicing. The floors have seen a lot of movement over the years and have the scuffs to prove it. We started this because we wanted a place in Matunga where people could just come and move. Sometimes the stairs in the building feel a bit steep after a long session, but that is part of the charm of these older Matunga structures. On rainy days, the sound on the roof is actually quite loud. We usually have music playing anyway, so it doesn't matter too much. There’s a certain smell of old wood that stays in the air, which feels like home to us. The neighbors in Parvati Niwas are used to us by now, even with the music and the noise. We often see the same faces every day walking toward the station. It’s a small community vibe. We don't have a big reception desk, just a corner to put your bags.
