National & Co. Jaliwala is located at 109 Abdul Rehman Street. If you know Mumbai, you know this street is incredibly busy and packed with all sorts of shops. We specialize in jali or wire mesh, which is why everyone calls us Jaliwala. Our shop is an old one, and it is filled from floor to ceiling with different types of metal screens, nets, and perforated sheets. It’s a narrow space, so we have to be very careful how we stack things so nothing falls over. The noise from the street is constant—horns honking and people shouting—but we don't even notice it anymore. We spend our days rolling out mesh, cutting it to the size the customer wants, and tieing it up with wire. It is dusty work and your hands get pretty dirty handling the metal all day. We have been on Abdul Rehman Street for a long time, and we have seen the city change around us. We don't do any big promotions or have a fancy storefront. People just know that if they need a specific kind of mesh for a window or a machine, they can come to us. We have our regular customers who have been coming to this shop for decades. It is a simple, honest business and we take it one day at a time, making sure we have the stock people need.
