Nagardas Kanji Shah

Our family business, Nagardas Kanji Shah, is located at 176, Magazine Street in the Daru Khana area. Being near Reay Road means we are right in the heart of the old iron and scrap market. You can hear the sounds of heavy metal being moved and the distant train horns all day long. The building is quite old and has that specific smell of rust and dust that you only find in this part of Mumbai. We’ve been here for a long time, and the place reflects that. There are old wooden ledgers stacked on the upper shelves and the walls are covered in years of grime that we never quite get around to scrubbing off. Our work involves a lot of physical checking of materials out in the yard and then coming back in to handle the records. It's a bit cramped inside because we have so much stuff stored everywhere. The fan on the ceiling wobbles a little when it’s on the high setting, but it keeps the air moving. We usually have visitors dropping by just to chat or ask about prices, and we always have a chair ready for them. It’s not a corporate office by any means. It’s a place where we work with our hands and our heads, surrounded by the history of the neighborhood. We just take things one day at a time, keeping the business going like we always have.
