Mothers Kitchen

Mothers Kitchen is located at D-22, Kastur Mahal in Sion. Mumbai is a crowded place, and our little corner in Sion is no different. We operate out of this old building, and it has its own character, for better or worse. It’s a small setup where we focus on cooking the kind of food we grew up with. The kitchen is small, so it gets a bit cramped when three or four of us are working at the same time. We start early in the morning, usually before the sun is even up, to get the prep work done. The 400022 area is pretty lively, so there’s always someone poking their head in. We don't have a big dining hall or anything like that. It’s more of a practical space where the food is the main thing. People from the neighborhood know us well. They stop by on their way home from work. Sometimes the sink leaks or we run out of a specific spice and have to run to the market quickly. That’s just how it goes here. We don’t have a fancy website or a big marketing plan. We just open the doors and start cooking. It’s a lot of manual labor, scrubbing pots and chopping onions all day. But we like the routine of it. Being in Kastur Mahal feels like being part of the local history of Sion.
