Madhu Chikan Creation

We are located in Akshardham Society, specifically in the B Wing, room 302. It’s just off the Link Road in Malad West. This isn't a typical shop on the street where you can just see a window. You have to come into the building. We focus on Chikan embroidery, which is a lot of slow, manual work. My family has been interested in these traditional patterns for a long time. The room is usually filled with stacks of cloth and different threads. It’s quiet work, mostly sitting and sewing or checking the quality of the pieces we get. People find us by word of mouth mostly. They know someone who bought a kurta here, and then they come looking for us. Malad is always growing, and the Link Road is much busier than it used to be, but once you get inside the society, it’s a bit calmer. We spend our mornings sorting through the new arrivals from the artisans. Sometimes the thread isn't the right shade of blue, or the fabric has a small pull, so we have to be very careful. It’s not a fast-paced business. You can't rush handiwork. We like talking to the customers about the different stitches. It’s a small operation, and we don't have any big ambitions to be in a mall. We like it right here where we can focus on the embroidery itself and talk to people who actually appreciate the craft.
