Maa Gaytri Sarees

Maa Gaytri Sarees is located at No. 313 on Kalbadevi Road. We are in the Kapadia Building on the 1st floor. It’s right opposite Kakad Market, which is a landmark most people in the textile trade know. Being on the first floor means people have to walk up the stairs, but they don't seem to mind. The building is old, like most of the structures in this part of Mumbai. We deal in sarees, mostly wholesale but we talk to everyone. The area is always noisy with carts and trucks moving goods around. It’s the heart of the cloth market. Inside the shop, it’s a bit quieter but still busy with packing and unpacking. We have stacks of sarees reaching almost to the ceiling sometimes. We focus on getting the stock in from the weavers and out to the shops. It’s a lot of phone calls and checking lists. My father started this and now I’m here most days. We don't have a website or anything like that, just the physical shop and our ledgers. The fans hum all day to keep the heat away. It’s a tight space but we know where everything is. Sometimes the traffic on Kalbadevi Road is so bad it takes forever to get a delivery out, but that’s just life in this city. We just keep going, day after day, handling the sarees. We have been here since the nineties and the building hasn't changed much at all.
