Our place is at No. 9/11 in the 1st Cross of Old Hanuman Lane. If you’ve ever been to Kalbadevi, you know it’s a maze of narrow streets and old buildings. We are right in the middle of all that cloth market chaos. Sanjay Sarees has been operating from this spot for quite some time. The building is old, and the stairs are a bit steep, but that’s just how it is in this part of Mumbai. We spend most of our day surrounded by stacks of sarees. There are silks, cottons, and synthetics everywhere you look. It’s not a showroom with big glass windows and mannequins. It’s more of a workspace where we manage stocks and talk to traders. The fans stay on all day because the air gets heavy with all the fabric around. Sometimes the tea guy from the corner comes by twice a day, and that’s when we take a small break. Loading and unloading happens right on the street, which is always a struggle with the handcarts and people pushing past. We keep track of everything in big ledgers and on the computer. It’s a lot of work keeping up with the colors and patterns that go in and out. It’s busy, loud, and crowded, but this is where the business happens. We just focus on getting the bundles ready for the next truck.
