Jaya Navin Khemchandani

I work out of room 405 in the Harsha Building, which is over in the Gokul Extension of Andheri West. Specifically, it's on the 1st Cross in Phase 11. It is a quiet enough office building once you get inside, though the street outside is usually a mess of rickshaws and people. I’ve been in this office for a good number of years now. My desk is tucked into the corner near the window, and I can see the tops of the trees from there. There are always piles of folders and papers that need looking at. I don’t have a big staff or a fancy reception area. Usually, it’s just me and the phone ringing. People come by to drop off documents or to sit and talk through things for an hour or so. The lift in the building can be a bit slow, so I often just take the stairs if I’m in a hurry. I spend a lot of my time reading and making notes. It’s a very independent sort of life. Sometimes I stay late when the building is empty just to get through the work without any distractions. The neighborhood has changed a lot since I first moved into this building, with new shops opening up all the time. I just keep my head down and get the work done. It’s a straightforward way to earn a living.
