You can find us over at Office No 111 in the Nair Building. It’s on Grant Road, right across from Marwadi Vidyalay and near Kanak Pura Road. It’s not a huge space, but we have enough room for the tables and the lamps. When you come in, the first thing you notice is how quiet everyone is. Everyone is usually leaning over a stone with a loupe, trying to see the tiny details. We don’t have fancy carpets or anything like that because they just trap dust and small bits. The light needs to be just right for looking at diamonds, so we spend a lot of time adjusting the bulbs and making sure the workspace is clear. Sometimes the elevator in the building acts up, so you might have to take the stairs to the first floor. It’s just how it goes in these older buildings. We’ve been teaching people how to look at stones and understand the cuts for a long time now. It’s not something you learn in a day. It takes a lot of squinting and patience to get it right. We have people coming in from all over the neighborhood. Sometimes we sit around and drink tea when our eyes get tired. The street outside is always noisy with traffic, but once you’re inside the office, you kind of forget about it. It’s just a simple setup for learning a very specific trade. We keep the doors open six days a week.
