Domestic Centre

If you are walking down Lamington Road in Chembur, you’ll find us at Shop No. 2 in the Kashi Niketan building. It is a busy area, always a lot of shouting and horns honking outside. Domestic Centre is a small shop, and we’ve crammed as much as we can onto the shelves. Sometimes it’s hard to find things, but we usually know exactly where every item is tucked away. We spend our days dealing with walk-ins and people asking for specific parts or household things. The floor is a bit uneven, and the front door squeaks every time someone enters, but that’s just the character of the place. We don't have a fancy uniform or a script we follow. We just talk to the customers like normal people. Most of the time, the counter is covered in invoices and a half-eaten lunch. It gets dusty because of the road, so there is always someone with a rag trying to keep the displays clean. We’ve been in Chembur for a while, and we know most of the other shopkeepers on this stretch. We close up when the street lights come on, usually tired but satisfied with the day’s work. There is no big mystery to how we run things. We just open the shutters in the morning and see who comes through the door. It’s a basic way to make a living, and we are happy with our little corner of Mumbai.
