Malad West is where we are, specifically at A 5. The Dj Institute Of Dj Raj is basically a room full of speakers, mixers, and a whole lot of wires. It’s usually pretty dark inside because we like to keep the lights low to get that club feel going. We’ve got a couple of sets of turntables that are constantly being used by students trying to learn how to beatmatch. It’s noisy, obviously, but we have some foam on the walls to keep the neighbors from complaining too much. I started this place because I wanted a spot to practice and it just grew from there. There’s a small couch in the corner that’s a bit lumpy, but it’s where we sit and talk about music. The floor is usually covered in headphone cords and power strips. We aren't a big school with a diploma or anything; it's more about just getting your hands on the gear and learning the trade. The air gets a bit thick when there are four or five people in here working, so we keep the fan on high. Most of the guys who come here are from around the neighborhood and want to play at parties or local gigs. It’s a real, raw space for people who actually care about the music. We don’t have a receptionist, so you just have to walk in and find me behind the decks.
