China Food Court

China Food Court is located at 16 E, BIT Chawl on K K Marg. We are right in the heart of Mumbai Central, which is a very crowded and lively area to be in. The Hanuman Temple is nearby, so we often hear the bells and see people passing by after their prayers. Living and working in a chawl area means you are always surrounded by people. There is a sense of community here that you don't find in the newer buildings. Our kitchen is small and gets very hot in the summer months. We have a few benches for people to sit on while they wait for their food. The menu is simple and we have been making the same things for a long time now. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us doing everything from washing dishes to stirring the woks. The smell of ginger and garlic usually fills the air around our entrance. Sometimes the rain gets quite heavy on K K Marg and we have to put out buckets if there is a leak, but we manage. Most of our customers are people who live in the chawls or workers from the local shops. We know their names and how they like their food. It is not a glamorous place, but it is our livelihood and we have been here for years. We just keep the stoves hot and the floor swept.
