Art India Fabrics

Art India Fabrics is right on the ground floor of the Ratan Heights Building. We are at shop number 1, right on Lamington Road in Mumbai. If you know the 400004 area, you know how loud and busy it gets. There is always noise from the street coming into the shop. We deal with fabrics all day long, so there is always lint on the floor and rolls of cloth leaning against the walls. It’s a small space, but we make it work. Living and working in Mumbai means dealing with a lot of people and constant movement. We spend our mornings drinking tea and getting the shop ready for whoever walks in. It’s not a corporate environment at all. We wear regular clothes and talk to our customers like neighbors. Sometimes the rain leaks in a bit near the door during monsoon, but we just put a towel down. The building is older, but it has character. We’ve seen the neighborhood change over the years while we stayed right here in shop 1. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and measuring out lengths of fabric. Our hands are usually tired by the end of the day. We don't have a website or anything like that, just the physical shop where we do our business. It’s simple, honest work that keeps us going. The shelves are getting a bit old and they creak when we load them up with heavy silks or cottons.
