Our office is in the Riddi Siddi Building on Mithaghar Road, over in Mulund East. It’s a busy area because the station is so close, so there are always people walking past the entrance. We are a trading company, and our days are spent coordinating between the suppliers and the people buying the goods. The office is small. It’s usually filled with the sound of the ceiling fan and one of us talking on the phone to a client. We have three desks squeezed in together, and the walls are covered with calendars and notes we’ve scribbled to ourselves over the months. It’s not a place meant to impress anyone, it’s just where we work. We know the local porters and the truck drivers who handle the pickups. Sometimes the traffic on Mithaghar Road gets backed up and deliveries are late, but that’s just how it goes. We’ve been in this building for a long time and we’ve seen a lot of other businesses come and go. We stay here because the location is convenient for the railway lines. We usually have our lunch together at the desks, sharing whatever we brought from home. It’s a practical way to run a business without any of the extra stuff you see in the bigger offices. We focus on the trade and keep our heads down to get the work finished. Sometimes we stay late when the month is ending, but mostly we are out by seven.
