If you head over to Dehat Basti, you’ll find Shri Handicrafts right near the Naya Choraha. It’s a spot where things are always a bit cluttered, but that’s because we have so much stuff coming in and out. We work with a lot of local people who make things by hand, so the shop is usually full of the smell of raw wood, some dyes, and maybe a bit of dust from the fabrics. We don't have a big glass storefront like you’d see in a fancy mall. It’s more of a traditional space where items are stacked on wooden shelves or even just kept in crates until someone wants to see them. The Naya Choraha is a busy intersection, so there’s always a lot of dust and noise coming in from the street. We spend our mornings sorting through new pieces that come in from the villages and checking to make sure they aren't damaged. It’s not a high-tech business; we use a lot of handwritten receipts and we know most of our suppliers by their first names because we’ve been dealing with them for years. Sometimes the light in the back of the shop isn't great, so we take the bigger pieces outside to the front so people can see the colors better in the sun. It’s a simple life here, just surrounded by handmade things and the daily bustle of the Dehat Basti area. We don't put on any airs.
