S.H. Handicrafts is based in the Kachcha Bagh area, right near Neem Ki Piyau in the Ganj Bazar. It’s a really old part of town, so the streets are narrow and there’s always something going on with the market stalls around us. We’ve been working out of this small space for a long time, making things by hand. The workshop is usually a bit dusty because of all the materials we use, and there’s always a smell of glue or wood or whatever we are working on that day. We don’t have a big storefront with lights and signs; it’s more of a place where the actual work happens. People usually find us by word of mouth or by wandering through the bazaar. Most of the stuff we make is traditional, the kind of things that take a lot of time and patience. It’s not like a factory where everything is the same; each piece has its own little quirks because we do it ourselves. Sometimes we run out of space and have to stack things up in the corners. It’s a bit cramped, but it works for what we need to do. We spend most of our hours sitting on the floor or at low benches, just focusing on the details. It’s a quiet way to make a living in a very loud part of the city, and we just keep at it day after day.
