If you walk down the street near the Maqbara and look for the lane where Star Medical is, you will find Umama Handicraft. We are tucked away in that specific wali gali. It is a local place where we spend our time working on various handmade items. The workshop is often full of materials and bits of projects we are currently finishing. We started this because we like making things with our hands and there seemed to be a space for it here. It’s not a huge factory or anything like that, just a small operation where a few of us sit and get the work done. The street outside is usually noisy with people going to the medical shop or passing through the lane, but inside we just focus on the crafts. We don't have a big fancy showroom with bright lights. Most of our day is just about the textures of the materials and making sure the finishing is decent enough for someone to take home. Sometimes the lights flicker or the tea arrives late, but that’s just how things go in this part of town. We’ve been in this lane for a bit and most neighbors know where we are. It’s a simple life of making things and selling them to people who appreciate the effort that goes into a piece of handicraft. It is a quiet way to earn a living in a very busy neighborhood.
