St. Charles High School

St. Charles High School is located in Madurai, a place known for its heat and history. Our school isn't right in the middle of the temple crowd, but it’s still busy enough. The daily routine starts early because the sun gets so hot by midday. You see the staff arriving on cycles and scooters before the students fill the place up. The classrooms have high ceilings and old wooden desks that have seen many years of use. We have a lot of students, so the corridors are always full of life. You can hear the teachers explaining lessons from one room and the kids reciting something from another. It’s a constant hum of activity. Madurai can be quite noisy with all the traffic, but inside the gates, we try to keep some order. The playground is a big part of the school day for the kids. Even when it’s dusty, they are out there playing. We have a small office where all the records are kept in big cupboards. It’s a bit cramped in there, but we know where everything is. We don't go for big speeches or fancy brochures. We just show up, do our jobs, and make sure the students are learning what they need to. It’s a simple life here, focused on the basics. By the time the final bell rings, everyone is ready to head home and escape the afternoon sun. That is the way it goes.
