The school is right here in Thirupparankundram, just a short walk from the temple area. We’ve been around for a while now, teaching the local kids from around Madurai. Most mornings start with the sound of cycles pulling up and teachers getting their bags ready for the first bell. It’s a busy place, especially when the lunch break hits and everyone is out in the yard. We don't have fancy glass buildings or anything, just solid classrooms and plenty of books that have seen better days. The staff room is usually a mess of papers and half-drunk tea cups, but that's just how it goes when you're busy grading exams. Sometimes the heat gets a bit much in the afternoons, so we keep the fans running full blast. Parents drop by often to check on how their boys and girls are doing, and we usually just sit them down for a quick chat. It’s not a quiet job, that’s for sure. You hear the chanting from the temple nearby sometimes when the wind blows the right way. We just keep at it, day after day, making sure the lessons get finished and the gates are locked on time. It’s a community thing mostly, seeing these kids grow up from small children into young adults who might move away for work later. We stay right here in 625 005, keeping the lights on and the chalkboards dusty.
