If you drive down Sivaganga Road in Madurai, you’ll find Lakshmi Matriculation Higher School Secondary over in Veerapanjan. It’s a big building because we handle everything up to the higher secondary levels. The heat in Madurai can be really something, so the fans are always humming in the classrooms. We have been part of this community for a long time, and many people around Veerapanjan know us well. The school sits right along the main road, so it’s easy to find but it can be a bit noisy with the lorries passing by. We have a large group of students, from the little ones starting out to the older ones getting ready for their final board exams. The playground is usually full during the lunch hour with kids playing and eating under the trees. Our desks are the sturdy wooden kind that have seen many years of use. We don’t use a lot of big words or fancy talk here; we just try to make sure the kids understand their lessons. There is a lot of writing on the blackboards and plenty of homework to go around. It’s a regular school life, filled with the sound of bells ringing and students chatting in the hallways.
