Guru Nanak Rice Mills

Guru Nanak Rice Mills is based in the village of Rattanheri. It is a pretty quiet spot for most of the year until the harvest season rolls around. Then things get really busy for us here. We spend our mornings checking the moisture in the grain and making sure the hullers are running right. The machines are old and they make a lot of noise, but they still work fine if you treat them with a bit of care. My father started this mill a long time ago and now I am here doing the same kind of work every day. The dust from the rice gets into everything, even your tea if you aren't careful where you put it. We mostly deal with the local farmers from around the village. It isn't some big fancy operation with shiny floors or anything like that. It is just a big shed with heavy equipment and a lot of gunny bags piled up. Sometimes the power cuts out in the middle of a run and we just have to sit out on the porch and wait until it comes back. That is just how life goes in Rattanheri. We keep all our books in a wooden drawer and we prefer to talk to people face to face. It works for us. By the end of the shift, we are usually covered in husk bits and ready for a wash. It is honest work and we just focus on getting the rice cleaned.
