Bhagwati Rice Mills

You’ll find us on Ubhewal Road, right near the drain bridge. It’s a busy spot, especially when the harvest is in full swing. The road can get a bit rough there, but we manage. Bhagwati Rice Mills is just a bunch of buildings and a lot of hard work. We spend most of our time out in the yard or near the hullers. It gets quite noisy, so we’ve learned to communicate with hand signals mostly. My brother handles the intake while I watch the grain come out. We don’t use any big slogans. We just look at the stuff and know if it’s alright or not. There’s a lot of dust, that’s just the reality of a rice mill. We keep a pot of tea going in the corner of the small office. It’s where we sit with the farmers and talk about how the crop is doing. Sometimes the machines act up and we have to spend half a day covered in oil trying to get a belt back on. It’s frustrating but it’s part of the trade. The sun sets behind the bridge and that’s usually when we start thinking about heading home. It’s a long day, every day, but we’re used to it by now. There isn't much to it besides that, just keeping the grain moving through the machines and into the sacks.
