Avtar Cement Iron Store

Down on Pakhowal Road in the Sardar Nagar area, you’ll see our shop, Avtar Cement Iron Store. It’s a heavy place, if that makes sense. We deal with cement bags and iron rods all day, so there is always a layer of gray dust on everything, including my shoes. The trucks come in early in the morning when the air is still a bit cool, and we spend a lot of time unloading and stacking. It’s hard work, and by the end of the day, your back definitely feels it. We don’t have a fancy showroom because there’s no point when you’re selling building materials. It’s just a big open space with stacks of bags and bundles of metal leaning against the walls. The phone rings a lot with people asking about prices or when a delivery might arrive at their site. We try to keep things organized, but when three trucks show up at once, it gets a bit chaotic out front on the road. The sun hits the front of the store pretty hard in the afternoon, so we usually sit back in the shade of the warehouse then. It’s a straightforward business, really. People need stuff to build their houses or shops, and we happen to have it here in Sardar Nagar. We’ve been at this for years, and most of the guys working here have been with us since the start. It’s just how we earn our living.
