If you head out towards Shahabad and find Village Khanpur Jattan, that’s where we are. Our group, Khanpur Jattan Farmers Producer Companylimited, is headquartered right at house 245. It’s near Rattangarh. A few of us decided a while back that we needed a better way to manage our crops and get them to the market. Farming in this area is what we know. Most of the people involved in this company grew up on these fields. We see each other every day at the tea stall or out in the paddies, so it made sense to put our names down on paper and start working together. It’s not always easy. Sometimes the machinery breaks down or the market prices drop right when we’re ready to sell. Having this setup helps us stay a bit more stable. We use the village office to keep track of who is growing what and when we need to buy supplies. It’s a very local thing. We don't have a big staff, just the farmers themselves helping out with the books. We wanted to make sure our village stays productive. There’s a lot of history in the soil here. We just want to keep that going and make sure the next generation has something solid to work with. It's honest work and we do it together because it's better than being alone. Some seasons are better than others but we just keep at it.
