Ankur Cement Company

Ankur Cement Company is situated right by Kheldi Phatak on Subhash Marg. Being near a railway crossing means we spend a good part of our day listening to the trains whistle and the gates clanking shut. It gives the place a certain rhythm. We deal with cement, so everything in the shop has a thin layer of grey dust on it, no matter how much we try to sweep it out. Subhash Marg is a busy road, and we get a lot of people stopping in who are just starting a small repair or a big building project. We don't have a big staff, so if we're in the back loading a truck, you might have to wait a minute for us to come to the front. We keep our records in big handwritten books because that’s the way we’ve always done it. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but it works for us. The air in the shop is always a bit dry. We have a small water cooler in the corner that gets a lot of use during the summer months. It’s not the kind of place where you’d find a lounge or a fancy reception. It’s just a warehouse and a desk. We know the regular drivers who come through Kheldi Phatak, and we often share a quick word while they wait for the tracks to clear. It’s a plain, honest way to make a living.
