Running Agarwal Building Material on Jawahar Nagar Main Road keeps us on our feet from the moment we open up at A-8. There is always a lot of dust because of the cement bags and the sand we keep out back. The trucks come and go all day long and the noise from the main road is constant but you stop noticing it after a while. I spend a lot of time on the phone talking to suppliers or writing down orders in my big ledger book on the desk. The desk itself is covered in bits of paper and old coffee stains because things get pretty hectic during the construction season. We don’t have a fancy showroom or anything like that. People just come here because they know we have the basic stuff they need to finish their walls or fix their floors. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and my back feels it by the end of the day but that is just part of the job. We have a small crew who helps with the loading and unloading and we’ve all worked together for a long time. The shop is more of a yard really with piles of bricks and stacks of bags everywhere you look. It’s not a pretty place but it’s practical and it gets the job done for the folks in Jawahar Nagar who are building their homes or fixing a leak. We close up when it gets dark and start again tomorrow.
