We are a small school located in the Kottukkal area, specifically the G.L.P.S. in Chadayamangalam, Kollam. It’s a government lower primary school, so we mostly see the younger children from the surrounding village. The school is a simple building, tucked away in a spot that’s surrounded by a lot of greenery, which is typical for this part of Kerala. We have a handful of classrooms where the little ones learn their first lessons in reading and writing. It’s often quite noisy because children that age don’t really know how to stay quiet for long. You’ll hear them reciting their lessons or playing during the breaks. The teachers have to be patient, and they spend a lot of time organizing things for the kids. We don’t have any modern gadgets or expensive equipment; it’s just basic benches, some charts on the walls, and the local curriculum. People in the village know us well, and many of the parents went to this same school when they were young. The path leading up to the school can get a bit muddy when the monsoons hit, but that’s just how it is here. We focus on the basics and making sure the kids show up and learn something new every day. It’s a quiet life in Kottukkal, and the school is just one of those steady places that has been there for years. We don’t make a big fuss about things, we just teach the children who come through our gates.
