Singh Bricks & Tiles

Singh Bricks & Tiles is based out in Ghasiara, which is part of the Sonarpur area in the 24 Parganas South district. It’s a bit of a drive to get out here, but we have the space we need for the kilns and the stacks of tiles. The landscape around Ghasiara is still quite green in some places, though more buildings are going up every year. We spend our days mostly outdoors, checking on the batches and making sure the firing process is going okay. It is hot work, especially in the summer months when the sun is beating down on the yard. We don’t have a fancy showroom for our tiles. They are just stacked up in rows according to their type. Most people who come to see us are local builders or families from around Sonarpur who are fixing up their homes. We don’t use any high-tech systems for our orders, just a pen and a notebook. It’s the way we’ve always done it at Singh Bricks & Tiles. Sometimes the mud is a problem when the monsoon hits this part of 24 Parganas South, and everything slows down a bit. But we just wait for the ground to dry and get back to it. It’s a basic operation. We don’t have a lot of workers, so everyone chips in with whatever needs doing, whether it’s loading a cart or cleaning up the yard. It’s just how life goes here in Ghasiara.
