Being up on the 3rd floor of the S. B. Tower gives a decent view of Shakesphere Sarani, though mostly you just see the tops of buses and the sea of umbrellas when it rains. The office at No. 37 is where all the paperwork for the mill happens. It’s usually a bit of a mess with stacks of invoices, mill certificates, and delivery notes piled up on the wooden desks. You can hear the hum of the air conditioner trying its best against the heat outside, but it never quite wins. People are constantly coming in and out, mostly truck drivers or site supervisors with dusty shoes, bringing news from the rolling floors. We deal with a lot of steel, so the talk is always about thickness, weight, and delivery schedules that seem to change every hour. There is a small pantry in the back where the kettle is almost always boiling for someone’s tea. The walls are painted a dull cream color that has faded over the years, and the calendars are usually a month behind. It’s not the kind of office you see in movies, it’s just a place where work gets done. By the end of the day, the trash cans are full of scrapped notes and the phone finally stops ringing for a bit. We lock up the heavy door and head down the lift, ready to do it all again tomorrow morning when the sun hits the tower windows.
