New Art Salon

New Art Salon is located at 3/7 C, Gora Chand Bose Road. It is on a relatively quiet street compared to the main roads around this part of Kolkata. The salon has been here for a long time. We call it New Art, even though the shop itself looks a bit old now. It is just a simple room with a few stations for cutting hair. We mostly handle haircuts for men and children from the local neighborhood. Sometimes a younger guy comes in asking for a modern style they saw on their phone, and we do our best with the scissors to match it. Most of the older men just want the same trim they have been getting for twenty years. We keep a stack of newspapers on a side table for people to read while they wait their turn. The walls could probably use some fresh paint, but the mirrors are always clean and our scissors stay sharp, which is the important part. We do not spend any money on big signs or flyers because people usually find us by word of mouth or just by walking past on their way home. It is a local business through and through. The owner is usually here from early morning until late in the evening. We take a small break in the afternoon when the heat gets too bad. It is a steady and normal way to make a living in this city.
