About European Art Gallery – Art & Craft in Kolkata
We are tucked away on Princep Street at 2 Chandni Chowk Street. This part of Kolkata has a lot of history, and you can feel it when you walk down the narrow lanes. Our gallery is a quiet place compared to the noise of the main road. We have paintings and frames leaning against the walls and hanging up wherever there is space. It is not a modern, white-walled gallery like you see in magazines. It’s an old space with high ceilings and a bit of dust in the corners. We spend a lot of time framing pictures for people who bring in old photos or new artworks. There is always a smell of wood glue and glass cleaner. We don’t get huge crowds, just people who wander in while exploring the area. We sit behind a small wooden desk and wait for visitors. Sometimes we spend the afternoon just cleaning the glass on the frames or reorganizing the back room. The light inside is a bit soft, which is good for looking at the art. We have been here for a long time, and we like the slow pace of this street. It’s a bit of a squeeze when we get a large delivery of frames, but we manage. We don’t have any fancy events or openings. We just open the doors in the morning and stay until evening. It’s just a quiet spot for art in a very busy city, and we like it that way.
