Working at Mery Fish Traders Private Limited means getting up very early. We are located at 71/17 Topsia Road (South) in Kolkata. The 700046 area is quite active, especially when it comes to the fish trade. Our space is usually wet and smells like the sea, which is expected given what we do. We aren't a corporate office with carpets; it’s more about concrete floors and plastic crates. We handle a lot of fish every single day. Some come from nearby and some from further away. It’s a lot of physical work, moving ice and sorting through the catch. We have a small group of workers who have been with us for years. We don't really have a 'mission' or anything like that, we just want to sell the fish we have before the day ends. The traffic on Topsia Road can be quite something in the mornings. You have to be quick in this business or things spoil. We spend our time checking the quality and talking to the buyers who come by. It’s a bit chaotic at times, with everyone shouting their prices, but that’s the nature of the trade. We’ve been at this specific spot for a while and the locals know us. It’s a tough job but it’s what we do to provide for our families. We just keep it simple. We have a lot of local tea twice a day to keep us going through the cold mornings.
