We’ve been at 60, First Main Road in Rajah Annamalai Puram for quite a while now. The building doesn't look like much from the outside, but it gets the job done. Every morning we open up the shutters and start the machines. It gets pretty loud once everything is running, especially in the summer when the heat in Chennai really picks up. We focus mostly on metal caps here. You’ve probably seen the kind of things we make without even realizing it. The street outside stays busy with people heading to work, and sometimes the traffic gets backed up right in front of our door. We’ve got a small team, just a few guys who know how to handle the presses and make sure the sizes are right. Most of us live nearby, so the commute isn't too bad unless it rains. We don’t spend much time on fancy decorations or anything like that. The floor is usually covered in scrap metal bits and oil, but that’s just how a workshop is. When people come by looking for Lakshmi Metal Caps, they usually find us by the sound of the clanking metal. We keep a ledger on the old desk and drink tea twice a day when the boy brings it around. It’s steady work, nothing too exciting, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We like being in R.A. Puram, it feels like a proper neighborhood where people actually know each other.
