Our main office is situated at 8 India Exchange Place. If you know this part of Kolkata, you know it is right in the heart of the old business district. The building is one of those older ones with thick walls and high ceilings. We have been here for a long time. It can get very crowded on the streets outside with all the vendors and people rushing to the banks and other offices. Most of our work involves managing what happens at the plantations but this is where the paperwork gets done. We have desks piled with ledgers and files because there is always something to track. The fans hum all day long to keep the air moving. It’s not a modern glass building but it has its own character. We get the morning mail and start going through the reports from the field. Sometimes the lift in the building is slow so we just take the stairs. Lunch is usually something brought from home or picked up from a stall on the street. It is a busy atmosphere but we are used to the noise of the city coming through the windows. Dealing with the tea and plantation side of things keeps us busy throughout the year. It’s a lot of talking on the phone and writing down numbers. We just focus on keeping the records straight and the office running.
