Jou Guru Bhander

Kalpukur Road is one of those Kolkata streets where life moves at its own pace. Jou Guru Bhander is a small grocery shop where we spend our days weighing out pulses and mustard oil. The shop has a heavy wooden door that we pull shut every night, and the stone floor inside always feels a bit cool, even when the humidity outside is really high. We keep the big sacks of rice and potatoes right at the front so they are easy to get to. The walls are lined with glass jars that have seen better days, filled with different kinds of spices that make the whole place smell like a kitchen. We don't have much room to move around, especially when the morning delivery arrives and the crates are sitting in the middle of the floor. There is an old clock on the wall that ticks quite loudly, but we don't really pay attention to it anymore. People come in mostly for their daily needs, buying just enough for a day or two. We have a lot of elderly customers who like to stay and talk for a bit about the news or their health. We don't have any fancy marketing or bright posters, just the goods we sell and a small stool for someone to sit if they are tired. It’s a local place for local people, and we’ve been part of this street for as long as I can remember.
