Graminhat Farmers Producer Companylimited is based out in Chetua, in the Rajnagar area. You have to look for Tapan Kr Jana’s house to find the main spot where we meet up. This part of Paschim Medinipur is very much tied to the land. Most of us grew up watching our fathers and grandfathers work these same fields. It’s a collective effort, really. Being a producer company just means a bunch of us farmers in the Midnapore area decided it was better to work together than to struggle alone. We deal with all sorts of crops depending on what time of year it is. The sun out here can be brutal, and the work is mostly physical labor. There isn't much room for being fancy when you're worried about rain and pests. We spend a lot of time talking about seed quality and how much the diesel for the pumps is costing us these days. It’s a very practical kind of life. We don't have any big corporate goals; we just want to make sure the harvest is good enough to sustain our homes. Sometimes we meet under the trees to discuss things instead of in an office. It’s just easier that way. We know the people in this community and they know us. We are just a group of locals trying to keep the farming tradition going while making it work in today's world.
