Our place is in Sagar Estate, specifically at 2, N.C. Dutta Sarani. We occupy B-Unit No. 3, which is a bit of a walk through the corridors but we’ve been here long enough that the path is second nature. Dealing with steel in a city like Kolkata means you’re always around old buildings and a lot of history. The office isn't anything special to look at, just some heavy desks and shelves filled with old records. We spend a lot of time on the phone coordinating with the yards and making sure the trucks are where they need to be. It can get pretty humid in the office during the monsoon, but we just keep the fans going and carry on. We aren't trying to be the biggest or the flashiest company out there; we just want to make sure the steel gets delivered and the numbers add up at the end of the month. Most of us have been in this trade for decades, so we’ve seen the market go up and down plenty of times. It’s just how it goes. We drink a lot of tea, talk about the news, and keep the business running from our little unit in Sagar Estate. It’s a quiet, steady kind of work and we like it that way. No need for anything fancy when the job is about heavy metal and hard work. We just keep our heads down and stay on top of the daily orders.
