We have been sitting here at 126/B on S P Mukherjee Road for a good while now. The Kalighat area is always loud and moving, so there is never a quiet moment outside the door. Our shop is not one of those big fancy places you see in the malls. It is just a regular spot with a lot of watches and some old tools. Most of the time, I am hunched over a desk with a magnifying glass trying to see tiny gears. Some days are just about changing batteries or fixing a strap that finally gave up. The counter has plenty of scratches on it from years of people leaning over to show us their broken clocks. We do not have a big staff or a marketing team. It is just us doing what needs to be done. Sometimes the humidity in Kolkata makes everything feel a bit sticky, but we just keep the fan going and work through it. People come in from the street because they are passing by the temple or heading to work. We talk about the weather or the traffic while I look at their watches. It is a simple life and the work is steady. We have seen the neighborhood change quite a bit over the years, but our little corner stays pretty much the same.
