Balaji Steel Enterprise

Our office is at 22 Strand Road in the Bbd Bagh area, which is one of the busiest parts of Kolkata. We are right near Fairley Place and the Railway Board, so there are always thousands of people and vehicles moving outside our windows. The building we are in is quite old and has that classic high-ceiling feel, though it's seen better days. We deal in steel, so there is always a layer of dust on the desks and the smell of metal in the air. It’s a very noisy place because of the buses and the trams on the street below. We don't have a modern setup with cubicles. Instead, we have big old desks and lots of ledgers. Most of our work involves coordinating with suppliers and making sure the steel gets to where it needs to go. We spend a lot of time on the phone or sitting with customers who come in to discuss their requirements. It’s a gritty, hands-on business and we don't try to dress it up. The tea comes in small clay cups from the stall downstairs, and we usually have a few of those throughout the day. We’ve been part of this trading hub for a long time and we just keep doing what we've always done, day after day.
