We deal with readymix concrete, which means there is always a lot of mixing and trucks moving around. The machinery is big and it makes a lot of noise, but that’s the sound of work being done. We don't have a fancy office with air conditioning in every room. Most of the time, we are outside or in the shed making sure the mix is right. It’s a messy business, to be honest. There is dust and wet cement everywhere, but that’s just how it goes. We start our days early because construction starts early. If the trucks aren’t loaded and ready by dawn, we are already behind. We don't use any big words to describe what we do. We just make concrete and send it out to where it's needed. The guys working here are locals for the most part, and we all just want to get the job done and go home. Sometimes the equipment breaks down and we have to spend the afternoon fixing it with grease all over our hands. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s what keeps the buildings going up around Nandambakkam. We’re just a regular bunch of people working with cement. We’ve been doing this for a few years now and it’s become our daily routine.
