Ankita Handicrafts is run out of D-8 in Saraswati Nagar, over in the Basni area. It’s a place where things are made by hand, so it’s never perfectly clean or quiet. There is usually the sound of someone hammering or sanding something down. We have piles of wood and metal and fabric in various corners. We don't have a retail store with glass cases. If you come to see us, you’re basically walking into the middle of a workshop. It’s a bit messy, but that’s how we like it. The people working here have been doing this for years. We don't have a big corporate structure with managers for every little thing. We just talk to each other and get the crafts finished. Saraswati Nagar is a good spot for us because we are close to where a lot of our materials come from. We started small and we’ve stayed pretty small, which is fine by us. It lets us keep an eye on everything that leaves the door. We don't use any fancy marketing words to describe what we do. We just make handicrafts at our own pace. Some days we finish a lot, and other days we spend the whole time just fixing a mistake on a single piece. That’s just how it goes when you’re not a machine. D-8 is our home base, and it’s where we’ll probably stay for a long time because the community around here is good to us.
