Our group is based in Tialitha Kala, Barwasagar. We run things through Chandra Shekhar Yadav. We focus on spices and oilseeds, which is what this area is really known for. If you walk through the village during harvest time, you can smell the spices in the air. It’s hard work because these crops need a lot of care. You can't just plant them and forget about them. We are just a group of local farmers who decided to pool our resources. We aren't a big business with a polished reputation. We’re just neighbors who have known each other for years. We meet at Chandra Shekhar’s place to talk about the quality of the seeds and how the drying process is going. There is always a lot of work to do, like cleaning the seeds or bagging them up for the market. We don't have any fancy mission statements. We just want to make sure that the spices we grow in Barwasagar get to the people who want them, and that we get a fair price in return. It’s a very local operation. We use simple tools and do a lot of the work by hand. Sometimes the market prices for oilseeds drop and we all have a bit of a headache, but we stick together. It’s just honest work by people who care about the land and want to keep our farming traditions alive for the next generation.
